👀 Boosting your newborn's visual development
At birth, baby's vision is pretty blurry. They mainly pick up high-contrast patterns at a distance of 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches), which happens to be the exact distance between their face and yours during a feed. Nature thought of everything, mate.
What you'll need
- Black-and-white flashcards or board books (high-contrast patterns).
- A simple mobile with geometric shapes.
What to do
1. The sweet spot
Hold a black-and-white card about 25 cm (10 inches) from their eyes when baby is awake, alert, and chill.
2. Eye tracking
Move the card from left to right at a snail's pace to encourage baby to track the image with their eyes.
3. Facial gymnastics
Get right in front of them and gently exaggerate your facial expressions: wide smile, open mouth, raised eyebrows. You might look silly, but they'll be fascinated.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Holding things too far away Beyond 30 cm (12 inches), shapes turn into a total blur and they'll instantly lose interest.
- ❌ Relying on screens Forget visual stimulation apps: screens are a strict no-go for little ones under 3.
